Shrödinger's Box Taxidermy

Yeah….I know it's spelled wrong

Commissions Status: Closed

Looking for tanning, skull cleaning, or wet preservation work? I am a small batch tanner that works primarily on small animals, with a focus on rabbits. I have been collecting skulls and pelts since I was a child, and have been tanning for over five years 🙂

Prices do NOT include shipping, as that can only be determined once it’s packed up and ready to ship. If you are not local, you will also have to cover shipping to me as well.

Expect to pay between $4 and $12 for domestic return shipping of smaller packages, and at least $15 USD for international shipping of small packages. I always do my best to keep shipping as low as possible!

Custom Services

Pelt Tanning

I use Rittel’s EZ-tan, a home tanning system that produces a soft, white leather. I am currently only offering commissions on certain species, because I am not yet experienced enough to take on large, greasy, or otherwise “difficult” skins. Apologies for the inconvenience, but I hope to be able to offer these soon!

The prices below are base prices; pelts that require extra work (old bucks, extra fluffy rabbits like angora, or whole unskinned animals) will have a surcharge that will vary depending on the amount of additional work required.

Full Rabbits, Squirrels, etc: $40
Backpelts: $20
Wallhangers: $30

Dry Preservation: Contact for pricing

Bone Cleaning

I use the bucket method, which produces a really clean, naturally coloured bone that will need very little degreasing afterwards! I rarely lose teeth, especially with larger skulls, but I can’t guarantee there won’t be an incisor or two missing from smaller skulls.

I cannot 100% guarantee that there will not be a few missing bones from complete skeletons – particularly the wrist/ankle bones and the tailbones of smaller animals are particularly difficult to keep intact. he smaller the animal, the more likely it is that tiny bones will be lost. I will not leave you with a product you cannot articulate, however!

Small skulls: $20
Large/horned/antlered skulls: $40
Complete skeletons small animal: $40
Complete skeletons large animal: $50+ depending on size

Peroxide whitening at no extra charge for smaller skulls! Bigger things like large deer or hogs will be $.50 per bottle used.

Wet Preservation

Wet specimens are preserved with formalin and held in 70% isopropyl alcohol. They will last a lifetime with proper care! Please be aware that colour loss of skin/scales is normal – this is due to the denaturing process of preservation.

Completed specimens will be mostly devoid of formalin once they are completed, but I still highly recommend doing maintenance such as topping off jars or changing to new containers in a well-ventilated area with gloves and a mask just to be safe.

Because of the heightened risk of specimens being damaged during shipping, I am only offering this service to clients who are local to western Washington or able to drop off specimens at shows.

Tiny (up to 1.5″): $25
Small (up to 2″): $35
Medium (up to 6″): $45
Large (6″+): Contact me for pricing

Jars will be provided at extra cost; this varies depending on the size of the jar needed or style desired. If you have your own jar, there is no extra charge.
